Women's exclusion from the economic benefits of Green Revolution productivity gains while continuing to bear the unpaid reproductive and care labor that sustains agricultural families created a gender dimension to the agricultural crisis that is only beginning to be analyzed in Punjab-specific scholarship. The displacement of female agricultural labor to the urban informal economy — or its absorption into intensified unpaid domestic labor — represents a significant cost of agricultural modernization that productivity measures do not capture (Shiva, 1991).

The Sikh tradition's theoretical framework for gender — grounded in Guru Nanak's explicit opposition to the subordination of women and in the Guru Granth Sahib's consistent imagery of the human soul as feminine in its relationship to the divine — provides normative resources for analyzing and addressing women's agricultural subordination that go beyond secular feminist frameworks. The application of Gurmat gender ethics to agricultural policy — demanding that women's labor be counted, valued, compensated, and included in the governance of agricultural institutions — is both theologically grounded and practically urgent in the context of Punjab's agricultural transformation. Women's leadership in heritage seed saving movements, organic farming cooperatives, and community food sovereignty initiatives provides concrete examples of the Gurmat principle that those whose ਕਿਰਤ sustains the community must participate in its governance (Grewal, 1990).

Punjab's farmer debt crisis is one of the most serious ongoing humanitarian emergencies in contemporary South Asia, though it receives far less international attention than its magnitude warrants. Studies consistently document that the majority of Punjab's farming families carry significant debt — to institutional lenders (banks and cooperative credit societies) and to informal moneylenders — incurred primarily to finance the annual costs of Green Revolution inputs (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation energy costs) and capital equipment (tractors, pump sets, threshers). The arithmetic of this debt structure is merciless: when input costs rise faster than output prices (as they have in most years since the early 2000s), small and medium-scale farmers are unable to service their debts from agricultural income alone, leading to escalating debt spirals from which many families cannot recover without selling land or labor (Gill, 1998).

The social consequences of this debt crisis include the epidemic of farmer suicides that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in Punjab since the 1990s — most of them men, most from small and medium land-holding families, most in debt to multiple creditors. Farmer suicide rates in Punjab significantly exceed those of the general population, and the clustering of suicides in specific districts and seasons — particularly after crop failures that leave farmers unable to meet debt service payments — documents the link between agricultural insecurity and mental health crisis. The ਲੰਗਰ principle — that the basic necessities of life should be shared freely without commercial calculation — is a radical but Gurmat-grounded alternative to the market logic that structures Punjab's agricultural credit and food systems (Grewal, 1990).

The pathways toward ecological restoration in Punjab agriculture are increasingly well-documented in agronomic and agroecological research, even if their political-economic implementation faces formidable obstacles. The core technical interventions are clear: diversification of the rice-wheat monoculture with water-efficient crops (pulses, oilseeds, maize, vegetables, fruits) that maintain income while reducing water consumption; transition from flooded rice to direct-seeded or aerobic rice cultivation systems that dramatically reduce water use; rebuilding soil organic matter through compost, crop residue incorporation, green manuring, and reduced tillage; reducing chemical input dependency through integrated pest management, biological fertilization, and precision agriculture approaches; and restoring hedgerows, field margins, and watercourse vegetation to rebuild the ecological infrastructure that supports natural pest control and water regulation (Shiva, 1991).

The institutional and political-economic reforms required to enable this ecological transition are more difficult: minimum support price reform to incentivize crop diversification beyond rice and wheat; agricultural credit reform to reduce farmer input dependency on informal moneylenders; land reform to address the concentration and fragmentation of holdings that prevent both scale economies and ecological diversification; investment in market infrastructure for diverse crops that currently lack reliable markets; and research and extension investment in low-input, high-diversity farming systems rather than the continued refinement of Green Revolution high-input monocultures. The political resistance to these reforms — from input suppliers, commodity traders, and landed interests with stakes in the current system — is substantial, and their implementation requires the kind of organized, theologically motivated community advocacy that the Sikh tradition is historically equipped to provide (Gill, 1998).

The Gurmat ecological vision for Punjab agriculture synthesizes the tradition's theological resources — ਕੁਦਰਤ as sacred, ਧਰਤੀ as mother, ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ as dignified labor, ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ as distributive justice, ਸੇਵਾ as stewardship — with the best contemporary science of agroecology, soil health, and food systems to articulate what a truly sustainable Punjab agriculture might look like. It is an agriculture that works with rather than against natural systems, that distributes its benefits equitably rather than concentrating them, that maintains the soil, water, and biodiversity on which future generations depend, and that sustains the social fabric of farming communities rather than destroying it. Realizing this vision requires the scholarly, community engagement, and advocacy work that Sikhi University graduates are uniquely positioned to provide.
