Terms of Service
Welcome to Sikh University ("the Platform"), a free, open educational website. By using the Platform you agree to these Terms.
- Educational purpose. Courses are provided for personal learning. Certificates of completion recognise progress on this Platform and are not accredited academic qualifications.
- Accounts. If accounts are enabled, you are responsible for the activity under your account and for keeping access to your email secure (we use passwordless "magic-link" sign-in).
- Acceptable use. Do not misuse the Platform, attempt to break its security, upload unlawful content, or harass others. Discussion and contributions must be respectful, especially given the sacred nature of much of the content.
- Content & accuracy. We strive for accuracy and review course material, but provide content "as is" without warranty. Some courses are AI-drafted (see AI Disclosure) and reviewed by an editor. Report errors via Contact.
- Intellectual property. Original Sikh University course material may not be re-sold. Third-party and openly-licensed materials remain under their own licenses, with attribution preserved.
- Changes & termination. We may update the Platform or these Terms; material changes will be posted here. We may suspend accounts that violate these Terms.
- Liability. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Platform is not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from its use.
Privacy Policy
We practise data minimisation: we collect only what is needed to run the Platform, and we never sell personal data.
- What we collect. If you create an account: your email address and your learning data (course progress, quiz results, certificates, and a display name you choose). If you contact us: the details you submit. Basic, privacy-respecting analytics may be collected in aggregate.
- Why (lawful bases under GDPR). To provide the service you request (contract/consent), to keep it secure (legitimate interests), and to comply with law.
- Cookies. We use only essential cookies/local storage needed for sign-in and to remember your progress. No advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
- Your rights (GDPR). Access, rectification, erasure ("right to be forgotten"), restriction, portability, and objection. You can export or delete your data from your account or by contacting us.
- Your rights (CCPA/CPRA). Right to know, delete, correct, and opt out of "sale"/"sharing" — we do not sell or share personal information. We will not discriminate for exercising these rights.
- Retention. We keep account data while your account is active and delete it on request or after prolonged inactivity.
- Security. Encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, least-privilege access, and the practices in our security model.
- Children. Not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country); we do not knowingly collect their data.
- International transfers & contact. Where data crosses borders we use appropriate safeguards. Privacy requests: Contact.
AI-content disclosure
Courses labelled Created by AI were drafted with the help of AI and reviewed by a Sikh University editor for accuracy. We label AI-assisted content for transparency. Sacred material is handled with care, but AI can err — please verify with authentic sources and report corrections.
Content, sources & licensing
The Platform is only as legitimate as the rights behind its content. We draw on three kinds of material, and nothing else:
- Material we own. Content from the Sikh Archive and its associated digitised library (our HuggingFace dataset) which we control and have the right to use. We still audit our own collections for any third-party items before redistributing them.
- Openly-licensed content. Works released under open licenses (for example Creative Commons), used strictly under the terms of their license. We preserve attribution and license notices, honour share-alike conditions where they apply, and respect non-commercial restrictions — the Platform is free, and any non-commercial material would be excluded from any paid offering.
- Third-party content used with written permission. Where material belongs to someone else and is not openly licensed, we use it only with that owner's written permission. We do not scrape or rehost copyrighted third-party videos, books, or courses; where appropriate we embed a creator's own public video or link out to the original instead.
Gurbani is public-domain scripture, presented faithfully and sourced with care. Modern translations and transliterations may be copyrighted, so we use only public-domain or openly-licensed renderings, or our own.
Original Sikh University course material may not be re-sold. Third-party and openly-licensed materials remain under their own licenses, with attribution and notices preserved. Trademarks of other institutions do not imply their endorsement of the Platform.
Sacred content & disclaimer
Sikh University is an independent educational resource. It is not a religious authority, and it is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the Akal Takht, any Takht, any Gurdwara, or any other Sikh institution.
Our content — especially material drafted with the help of AI — is provided for learning and may contain errors. It is not a substitute for guidance from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Panj Pyare, Granthis, or qualified scholars. For matters of faith, practice, or doctrine, please turn to authentic sources and your local Sangat.
Gurbani is presented with reverence and to the best of our ability for accuracy; even so, we encourage you to verify it against authentic, authoritative sources. The Platform makes no warranty as to the completeness or accuracy of any content and, consistent with the Liability term above, is not liable for any reliance placed on it.
Accessibility
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 AA: semantic structure, keyboard navigation, sufficient contrast, and resilient, low-bandwidth pages. Accessibility is ongoing — if something is hard to use, tell us via Contact and we will fix it.
Governing law, operator & changes
The Platform is operated by Dosanjh Labs, based in Washington, USA. These terms and policies are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules.
We may update these policies as the Platform evolves; material changes will be posted on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. For legal or privacy requests, contact us via the site's contact / feedback page.
These provisions are general drafts and must be reviewed and finalised by a qualified lawyer before launch.
