1.1 The Digital Humanities Turn
Digital humanities—the application of computational methods and digital tools to humanistic inquiry—has transformed the study of texts, history, and culture across many disciplines over the past three decades. From large-scale text mining and corpus analysis to geospatial mapping of historical phenomena, from three-dimensional reconstruction of ancient sites to network analysis of correspondence corpora, digital methods have opened new research questions and created new forms of scholarly argument.
The field is also contested. Critics from within the humanities have argued that the enthusiasm for digital methods has sometimes obscured fundamental questions about interpretation, meaning, and the irreducibly qualitative character of humanistic inquiry (Marche, "Literature is not Data," LA Review of Books, 2012). Others have raised concerns about the politics of digitization—about which texts and communities get digitized, who controls the resulting archives, and whose interpretive frameworks shape the computational categories applied to cultural materials (Risam, New Digital Worlds: Postcolonial Digital Humanities in Theory, Praxis, and Pedagogy, 2018).
For Sikh Studies, these debates have particular urgency. The SGGS is not merely a historical text but a living Guru—the sacred presence of the Divine for hundreds of millions of Sikhs worldwide. The application of computational methods to this text raises questions that are simultaneously scholarly and theological: What is at stake when a sacred text becomes a dataset? How do the interpretive frameworks embedded in digital tools reflect or distort the theological claims of the tradition? Who should control digital archives of Sikh sacred materials?
1.2 Current Landscape of Digital Sikh Studies
Several major projects have shaped the digital landscape of Sikh Studies. The SikhiToTheMax platform and the associated GurbaniDB project have made the full text of the SGGS available in digital form with multiple translations, transliterations, and cross-reference tools. The SikhNet organization has maintained an extensive audio archive of Sikh kirtan. The Sikh Research Institute and the Akal University have developed digital educational resources. The Sikh Digital Library project at GNDU and the work of the Sikh Foundation have contributed to the digitization of Sikh art and manuscripts.
Academic digital humanities projects in Sikh Studies are less numerous but growing. Gurinder Singh Mann's pioneering work on the Goindval Pothis and the textual history of the SGGS laid important groundwork for understanding the manuscript tradition, though his work predated the availability of the sophisticated digital tools now available (Mann, The Making of Sikh Scripture, 2001). More recent work has begun to apply computational text analysis to the SGGS, examining patterns of vocabulary, meter, and intertextuality across the text's multiple authorial voices.
1.3 Theoretical Foundations
Digital humanities work in Sikh Studies rests on several theoretical foundations that this course will examine in detail. The first is the theory of encoding: the recognition that any digital representation of a text involves interpretive choices about what to encode, how to structure it, and what metadata to attach. The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) has developed widely-used standards for encoding literary and historical texts in XML, but these standards reflect assumptions about textual structure that may not map straightforwardly onto the organizational logic of the SGGS.
The second foundation is corpus linguistics: the study of language patterns across large collections of texts. Computational analysis of the SGGS as a corpus can reveal patterns of vocabulary use, lexical borrowing across linguistic traditions (Sanskrit, Braj Bhasha, Persian, Punjabi), and statistical regularities in metrical structure that would be impossible to identify through manual reading. This kind of analysis complements rather than replaces close reading, offering a bird's-eye view that contextualizes the insights of detailed interpretation.
The third foundation is digital archiving and preservation: the challenges of maintaining digital collections over time, ensuring their accessibility, and making them findable and reusable by researchers. The digital humanities community has learned, often through painful experience, that digital preservation is not a solved problem—that digital materials are vulnerable to obsolescence, data corruption, and institutional discontinuity in ways that can be worse than the vulnerabilities of physical archives.
1.4 The Seminar's Approach
This graduate seminar combines theoretical reflection with practical engagement. Students will not only read about digital humanities methods but will work with digital tools and datasets—analyzing portions of the SGGS computationally, exploring existing digital Sikh archives, and critically evaluating the methodological and ethical choices embedded in these projects. We will also engage with the broader debates in digital humanities about interpretation, politics, and the relationship between computational and humanistic modes of inquiry.
A central commitment of the seminar is that digital methods are not neutral tools but interpretive frameworks that embed theoretical assumptions. To use a digital tool thoughtfully, one must understand not only how it works technically but what it assumes about the nature of texts, meaning, and cultural phenomena. This metacritical awareness is itself a form of the ਵਿਚਾਰ—thoughtful, reflective inquiry—that ਗੁਰਮਤਿ valorizes.
