1.1 The Problem of Science-Religion Dialogue
The relationship between religious metaphysics and natural science is one of the most contested terrain in contemporary intellectual life. From Ian Barbour's (1990) foundational typology of conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration, to Nancey Murphy and George Ellis's (1996) work on the moral order of the universe, to Carlo Rovelli's (2014) poetic scientific philosophy, a substantial body of scholarship has worked to articulate how religious and scientific accounts of reality relate to one another. This course applies this broad intellectual project to the specific interface between ਗੁਰਮਤਿ metaphysics — the metaphysical vision embedded in the ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ and developed by Sikh theologians — and the natural sciences, particularly physics, quantum mechanics, and cosmology.
The graduate student must begin with a clear methodological warning: the project of finding "parallels" between religious and scientific frameworks is intellectually hazardous. The history of such projects is littered with premature claims — from Fritjof Capra's (1975) The Tao of Physics, which drew controversial parallels between Eastern mysticism and quantum mechanics, to various attempts to read quantum indeterminacy as evidence for free will. The problem is not that the dialogue is impossible but that it requires precise conceptual analysis rather than surface-level analogy. A Gurbani passage about the divine permeating all things is not straightforwardly "like" quantum field theory's description of fields pervading spacetime; understanding why requires careful analysis of what each claim actually means, what evidence supports it, and what intellectual work it is doing.
1.2 What Gurmat Metaphysics Claims
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ metaphysics, as embedded in the ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ, makes several fundamental ontological claims. The most basic is encoded in the Mool Mantar: ਇੱਕ ਓਅੰਕਾਰ — there is one Being. This claim is not merely monotheistic in the sense of asserting one God as opposed to many; it is a claim about the ultimate unity of all reality. The divine is not merely one among the things that exist; the divine is the ground of being itself, the reality in which all apparently separate things inhere. This ontological monism — or, more precisely, this vision of a fundamental unity that underlies and pervades apparent multiplicity — has profound implications for how one thinks about the relationship between the physical universe and the divine.
Additional metaphysical claims follow: that the universe is created through the divine ਹੁਕਮ (will/command/order) rather than by chance or by some process external to the divine; that ਮਾਇਆ — the phenomenal world of apparent multiplicity and separation — is real but not ultimate, its reality dependent on the deeper reality of divine unity; that time is a feature of the created order, not a feature of the divine itself (which is ਅਕਾਲ — timeless); and that the natural world, as divine creation (ਕੁਦਰਤਿ), is a legitimate object of wonder, study, and care.
1.3 The Limits of the Dialogue
The dialogue between ਗੁਰਮਤਿ and physics has important limits that must be acknowledged. Physics is a methodologically constrained discipline: it studies mathematically describable regularities in the physical world, using empirical observation and experimental testing. It does not, as such, address questions of ultimate reality, consciousness, meaning, or value — not because these questions are unimportant but because they are outside physics's methodological reach. ਗੁਰਮਤਿ metaphysics, by contrast, is primarily concerned with precisely these questions: ultimate reality, consciousness, meaning, and the good life. The dialogue between them must therefore be careful about category: it cannot adjudicate which physical theory is correct by reference to religious texts, and it cannot establish theological claims by reference to physics experiments.
What the dialogue can legitimately do is mutual illumination: bringing ਗੁਰਮਤਿ concepts to bear on physics can sharpen philosophical understanding of what physics implies about the nature of reality; bringing physics to bear on ਗੁਰਮਤਿ can enrich the tradition's understanding of the natural world that its theology affirms as divine creation. This mutual illumination is the governing aim of this course.
1.4 Course Structure and Method
The course proceeds lesson by lesson through a series of key points of interface: unity and fundamental physics, creation and cosmology, space and time, quantum mechanics and ontology, consciousness, entropy, cosmological scale, relativity and phenomenology, and ecology. Each lesson takes a major concept or domain from both traditions and subjects it to careful comparative analysis. The final lesson synthesizes the course's findings into a provisional account of what a ਗੁਰਮਤਿ philosophy of nature might look like in dialogue with contemporary science.
Students are expected to have a working knowledge of both undergraduate-level physics concepts (classical mechanics, relativity, quantum mechanics, cosmology) and intermediate-level ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ study. The course does not teach physics from scratch but engages it philosophically, and does not teach the ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ from scratch but analyzes its metaphysical dimensions at graduate depth.
