Sikh Communities as Technology Ethics Actors

Sikh communities have unusual resources for technology ethics advocacy: a significant presence in the technology industry (many prominent engineers, product managers, and technology leaders identify as Sikh); a strong tradition of community ethical deliberation through the Panth's collective institutions; and a value system that provides specific, coherent guidance on the ethical questions that technology poses. These resources can be deployed in multiple ways: through individual professional practice (the Sikh engineer who advocates for algorithmic accountability within their company, expressing seva in their professional role); through community institutional action (gurdwaras developing ethical digital governance policies for their community platforms); and through political advocacy (Sikh professional associations engaging with policy debates about AI governance, data privacy, and autonomous weapons).

Closing Synthesis

The Sikh tradition that Guru Nanak Dev Ji founded was, from its beginnings, engaged with the technologies of power — spiritual, cultural, political, and material. The Gurus challenged the technologies of caste oppression (the Brahmin's sacred thread, the mosque's call to prayer as exclusionary rather than inclusive) with the technology of langar and the technology of the printing press for Gurbani distribution. Each generation of Sikhs has faced new technological conditions and applied the same core values — equality, service, truth, discernment, accountability — to the new challenges. The twenty-first century's technological challenges — AI, surveillance, biotechnology, autonomous weapons — are new in their specifics but not in their ethical structure: they pose the perennial questions of power, equality, and justice in new forms.
