ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ: The Mool Mantar as Complete Theology
The ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ is the theological seed (ਬੀਜ ਮੰਤਰ) from which the entire ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ unfolds. Standing at the very opening of the scripture, before ਜਪੁ ਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ and before every ਰਾਗ, it functions as a compressed and complete statement of Sikh doctrine concerning the nature of ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ. This intermediate-level course examines each term of the ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ — ੴ, ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ, ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ, ਨਿਰਭਉ, ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ, ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ, ਅਜੂਨੀ, ਸੈਭੰ, and ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ — not as isolated attributes but as a single, integrated theological architecture. Each lesson reads a term against the religious and philosophical inheritance of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Punjab, showing how ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ's formulation simultaneously affirms a radical monotheism and quietly displaces competing doctrines of avatar, ritual mediation, and fear-based devotion. Drawing on the commentarial tradition of ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, the ਫਰੀਦਕੋਟ ਟੀਕਾ, and modern academic scholarship, students learn to treat the ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ as a complete theology that is also a lived ਸਿਮਰਨ. By the course's end, a student should be able to expound any single term and demonstrate how it depends on and illuminates the others.
