ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ: Seat of Sikh Sovereignty

A comprehensive intermediate course on ਅਕਾਲ ਤਖ਼ਤ, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikh Panth founded by Guru Hargobind Ji in 1609 facing ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ. The course traces the doctrine of ਮੀਰੀ-ਪੀਰੀ, the institution of the five ਤਖ਼ਤ, the tradition of ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮੇ and ਗੁਰਮਤਾ, the governance of the Panth through ਸਰਬੱਤ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ during the ਮਿਸਲ period, the trauma of 1984, and contemporary debates over Panthic authority. Students examine the architectural and theological symbolism of the Takhat, its relationship to the ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ–ਗੁਰੂ ਪੰਥ doctrine, and its evolving role as the conscience and sovereign voice of the Khalsa.
