1. Introduction: The Hidden Environmental Cost of AI
When you ask an AI question, you do not see the data center. You do not see the tens of thousands of specialized chips running at full power, the industrial cooling systems drawing millions of gallons of water, or the electrical grid — sometimes powered by coal or natural gas — sustaining it all. AI is experienced as weightless and clean. It is neither.
The environmental costs of AI are large and growing. Training a single large language model can emit hundreds of tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Running it at scale for millions of users year-round multiplies that many times. The hardware — graphics processing units, memory chips, networking equipment — requires rare earth minerals extracted through environmentally destructive mining, and generates toxic electronic waste at end of life. Water consumption at AI data centers is staggering: thousands of litres per hour for cooling.
Gurbani opens with an ecological declaration. In Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak teaches (ਅੰਗ 8):
ਪਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥
"Air is the Guru, water is the father, great earth is the mother."
This verse does not merely describe nature. It assigns cosmic dignity to air, water, and earth — the very elements most threatened by AI infrastructure.
