Automation, AI, and Honest Work: A Sikh Ethics of Labour in the Age of Machines
As artificial intelligence automates millions of jobs, Sikh ethics offers a coherent and urgent framework for response. This course grounds the contemporary crisis of technological unemployment in the Gurmat teaching of ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਨੀ (honest, dignified labour), examines what automation and wealth concentration mean for Sikh workers and communities, and applies ਦਸਵੰਧ and ਸਰਬੱਤ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ as policy frameworks for ensuring that the gains of AI are shared across all of humanity.
AI, Energy, and the Earth: Gurbani's Call to Ecological Responsibility
Artificial intelligence carries a vast environmental footprint — data centers consume enormous quantities of electricity and water, AI hardware generates toxic e-waste, and the carbon cost of training frontier models rivals that of entire industries. This course reads that environmental crisis through the lens of Gurbani, placing the Sikh ecological ethic — rooted in Japji Sahib's declaration that air is Guru, water is father, and earth is mother — in direct conversation with the planetary costs of AI.
Artificial Intelligence and Human Dignity: Gurmat Perspectives on the Soul, Consciousness, and Technology
As artificial intelligence systems exhibit increasingly sophisticated behaviour — passing professional exams, generating poetry, holding extended conversations, expressing what appears to be emotion — fundamental questions about the nature of consciousness and human uniqueness become urgent. This course examines those questions through the lens of Gurbani, with particular focus on the concept of ਜੋਤਿ (divine light within), the nature of ਆਤਮਾ (soul), ਮਨ (mind), and ਵਿਵੇਕੁ (discernment), and what these theological concepts say about human dignity in AI-mediated systems.
